Geboren ca. 932, overleden te  Egmond op 6 mei 988. Hij was een Friese graaf (comes Fresonum), die tussen 965 en 988 het feitelijke bewind voerde over het graafschap West-Frisia, dat het gehele kustgebied besloeg tussen de Oosterschelde en het Vlie en bestond uit de gouwen: Masaland, Kinhem en Texla. Het formele leenschap beruste bij de Utrechtse bisschop.
Hij was de zoon van Dirk I van Holland en Gerberga van Hamaland.
Als schoonzoon van Arnulf I van Vlaanderen wist hij zich op te werpen als graaf van Gent.
Dirk II was gehuwd met Hildegard van Vlaanderen (geboren ca. 936, overleden 10 april 990), dochter van graaf Arnulf I van Vlaanderen (Zie Graven van Vlaanderen nr. 3) en Aleidis van Vermandois. Kinderen uit het huwelijk:

  • Arnulf (Gent, 951-993), ook wel Arnulf Gandensis genoemd (Volgt 3)

  • Egbert (952-994), aartsbisschop van Trier

  • Erlindis (953-1012), zou volgens de legende genezen zijn van blindheid.
