    Op zee overleden als Duits gevangene uit Ned. Indië op het door de Japanners gebombardeerde schip de Imhoff.
    Op 18 januari 1942 verliet het schip de Imhoff onder leiding van kapitein Herman Hoeksema de haven van Sibolga in Nederlands-Indië. Opdracht was het vervoeren van de circa 2300 Duitse en enkele Oostenrijkse gevangenen, aangezien voor potentiële spionnen, naar Bombay in het toenmalig Brits-Indië. Het bestuur van de toenmalige kolonie verplaatste de gevangenen uit vrees voor het naderende Japanse leger.
    Twee eerder vertrokken boten bereikten Bombay maar het derde en laatste transport met de Van Imhoff werd op de dag van vertrek getroffen door een torpedo uit een Japans gevechtsvliegtuig.
    Aan boord bevonden zich naar schatting 477 Duitse krijgsgevangenen en dwangarbeiders, 62 bewakers en 48 bemanningsleden[4]. De (Nederlandse) bewaking en bemanningsleden wisten via reddingsboten het schip te verlaten, maar lieten de Duitsers aan hun lot over. Slechts 65 Duitse gevangenen overleefden de scheepsramp, ruim 400 man verdronk of ontnam zichzelf ter plekke het leven. De overlevenden spoelden aan op het eiland Nias, ten westen van van Sumatra. Hier werden zij, na een kortstondige machtsovername, opnieuw gevangen gezet door de Nederlandse autoriteiten op het eiland. Zie: https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Van_Imhoff_(schip,_1914).
