Uncle George had notes saying: William remained in Tewkesbury where his first child Richard was born in 1619, soon after removed to the south counties. His wife and 6 children and brother George (unmarried) emigrated to New England in the ship "Mary & John" sailed from Plymouth March 20, 1630, 140 passengers, landing at Nantucket, (now Hull) Mass, May 30, 1630.

The Phelps family came originally from Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, England. Wm Phelps and his family and brother George were the first emigrants to New England. They are the ancestors of a large proportion of the Phelps Family in America.
