Det lêa ikke lige for, at Eskild Hjorth skulle leve et liv i musikkens tjeneste, men hans forµldre i Kolding – faderen var savvµrksarbejder, og moderen syede for et konfektionsfirma – s²rgede for, at han blev sin tids m²nsterbryder. Han fik bêade lµrt at spille violin og fik som den f²rste i familien en studentereksamen.

I den m²rke tid under Danmarks besµttelse begyndte han sin lµreruddannelse pêa Haderslev Statsseminarium. Hver weekend cyklede han hjem til Kolding for at hjµlpe med t²rvegravning. Som nyuddannet var han en overgang dirigent for Kolding Arbejdersangkor.

Efter endt uddannelse videreuddannede han sig, blandt andet pêa Musikkonservatoriet og pêa Danmarks Lµrerh²jskole i K²benhavn, sêa han snart efter kunne vende tilbage til Haderslev Statsseminarium f²rst som underviser i musikfaget og siden i mange êar ogsêa i en ledende stilling pêa det administrative omrêade som studielektor.

Det var pêa lµrerh²jskolen i K²benhavn, at han m²dte Tove Mariane Liengaard, der blev hans livsledsager gennem 60 êar f²rst i hjemmet pêa Solbakken i Haderslev og siden pêa Sommersted Plejehjem, hvor Tove d²de i 2010.

Gennem hele sit liv var Eskild Hjorth prµget af et stµrkt politisk engagement, der startede som formand for Det Radikale Venstre i Haderslev, men senere lêa lµngere til venstre for midten.
Ogsêa en lang rµkke organisationer og institutioner i musiklivet, Dansk Magisterforening og det lokale foreningsliv, bl.a. Gigtforeningen, har nydt godt af hans store organisatoriske evner og en vedholdenhed, der har hjulpet mange til at fêa deres ret. Han var skarp og levende interesseret i sin omverden til det sidste.
