    Gerrit Vermaat, age 83, of Beloit, died at 9:30 A.M. on December 28, 2007, at his home following a prolonged illness. Mr. Vermaat was born on April 29, 1924, in Bergambacht, The Netherlands, the son of Maarten and Koosje Vermaat. Mr. Vermaatresided in The Netherlands throughout World War II. Following the war, he attended college, completing a degree in engineering in three years. He moved to Indonesia in the late 1940's, returning to The Netherlands in 1956. Upon his return, he met Saakje (Sarah) A. Van Der Sluis, and married her on March 8, 1960. Mr. and Mrs. Vermaat immigrated to the United States on May 8, 1960. They settled in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where Mr. Vermaat was employed by the Oliver Machinery Company. They moved to Beloit in February 1962, after Mr. Vermaat accepted a job with Beloit Corporation. Mr. Vermaat then took a job with Gardner Machine Company, and continued to work for Gardner until his retirement in 1989. Mr. Vermaat was a man of deep religious beliefs. In addition, he had many interests including classical music, gardening, model-making, current events, and debating world politics. Furthermore, he pursued continued education throughout his life. But, of greatest importance, he enjoyedspending time with his many grandchildren. Mr. Vermaat was a man of quiet dignity and good humor, and also an inspiration to all he met. Survivors include his wife Sarah; daughter Betty (Tim) Lucas; sons Maarten (Kathy) Vermaat and James Vermaat; daughter Cosette Beaudin; and grandchildren Erin, Brittanie, Haley, Abigail, Andrew, Thomas, Nicolaas, and Axel. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 2, 2008 at Hansen-Gravitt Funeral Home with the Reverend Erik Jelinek, OurSavior Lutheran Church, Beloit officiating. Friends are welcome to visit with the family one hour prior to the funeral service.

Gerrit Vermaat, age 83, of Beloit, died at 9:30 A.M. on December 28, 2007, at his home following a prolonged illness. Mr. Vermaat was born on April 29, 1924, in Bergambacht, The Netherlands, the son of Maarten and Koosje Vermaat.

Mr. Vermaat resided in The Netherlands throughout World War II. Following the war, he attended college, completing a degree in engineering in three years.
