Opa, Adrianus Vermaat is geboren op 14 december 1875. Hij kwam uit een schippersgezin en had een eigen schip: een Sliedrechter Aak, met de naam: Deo Volente. Hij leerde oma kennen in de kruidenierswinkel van haar vader, waar zij toen werkte.Ze trouwden op 28 december 1905. (Hij was 30 en zij 23 jaar) en gingen wonen/werken op het schip. Als turfschipper voer hij door Nederland en oma vertelde, dat ze ook over de Rijn tot Bazel hebben gevaren.
