Notes about Dirk Spaander

Als oudste zoon moest Dirk zijn vader helpen bij het uitventen van de aardappelen, groenten en fruit. Maar zijn hart ging uit naar boeken. Stiekum maakte hij in zijn kar, naast de prei, wat ruimte voor het tijdschrift 'De Prins'. Onder de tomaten lag de 'Panorama' of een psalmenbundel verborgen. Als je om appels bij de kar kwam, kon je met een abonnement op een tijdschrift thuiskomen. In maart 1907 had Dirk zijn eigen winkel op de Marktstraat 60 (later het snoepwinkeltje van Neeltje Kok). Op 21 mei 1910 verhuisde hij naar de Markstraat 34-40, waar hij een bloeiende boek- en kantoorboekhandel opbouwde. Hij was de oprichter van de 'Onderlinge Glas Assurantie', een verzekering tegen schade aan winkelramen van Wormerveerse winkeliers. Hij zat in de bouwcommissie van de Gerf.kerk aan de Wattstraat en had samen met zijn broer Jan een zaak 'Bouwen en Behouden'.(K.Spaander bldz. 33)
