Hij verbleef in de negentiger jaren van de 19e eeuw enige tijd zonderzijn gezin te Pretoria, Republiek van Zuid Afrika. Hij probeerde aldaareen bestaan als koperslager op te bouwen, maar het uitbreken van deBoerenoorlog dwong hem terug te keren naar Nederland. Zijn gezin woondein die periode in de Zadelstraat te Hilversum.
Vele jaren woonden Ernst Hendrikus Rob en zijn echtgenote in deSt.Vitusstraat te Naarden, alwaar zij ook overleden.
