    Herman van Leeuwen must have been knighted about 1420 considering that he must have been about 20 before being able to be raised to knighthood. Herman van Leuwen was one of the leaders of the nobility, who in May 1442 by means of an appointment letter bound the nobility and cities in the land of Gelre of the 17. April 1735; see Great Gelre Plakaatbook II, Append. col. 191 to Nijhoff, documents, IV, nr. 158, page 130, 131. Herman van Leeuwen, in 1454 is mentioned on page 18 of an old list of knights, prepared between the years 1454 and 1465 regarding the billets in Nijmegen, and also under Malderik, now Maurik. Herman van Leeuwen is mentioned in the 1760 the old listing of "Ridders en Knegten in the Lande van Gelre" in 1460 ("Oude Geldersche Riddercedul 1468"). He is locaded in the list forthe city of Tiel in the "ampt Nederbetouwe".
