Question/answer » Why is a place not shown on the map?

Genealogy Online puts the places from your family tree on a map. For this, the place name has to be recognised. Genealogy Online compares your place names with large geographic databases. If that does not work, the place does not appear on the map.

Why is a place not recognised?

• The name has a spelling mistake. For example Rijswik instead of Rijswijk.
• The name is not unique. Rijswijk is in South Holland, but also in Gelderland and North Brabant.
• The name is an old or local name that is not in the databases.
• There is extra text in the field, such as a street name or a church.

How to fix it

1. Log in, go to Publication management and choose Place names. You can see which places were not recognised.
2. Change the place name in your own family tree program. Add the province or the country, for example Rijswijk, Zuid-Holland, Nederland.
3. Upload a new GEDCOM file.

Genealogy Online does not change your data itself. Your own file is always the source.
