      Hello again Colin
Thanks for your message. I will study the detail at sometime soon, during the daytime!
      However:
John Rankin and Jean Galt had a daughter named Agnes (1805-1876).
Agnes Rankin married John Craig (1807 to abt 1845) in 1830.
They had many children, one of whom was Jeannie Rankin Craig (1834-1912).
Jeannie married Robert Millar (1826/9- ).
Amongst their children was John Craig Millar, born in 1858, who, together with his wife Jane Roberts Mercer and their family, migrated to Australia in 1911. He was my Great grandfather.
Hoping that shows where I fit in
      Sue
Thanks Colin. We come down parallel lines from way back then. This morning when I checked my files, I confirmed I had found, downloaded and used these books previously and you were right, they did have some good references in them. The Rankins were easier to find information on due to their work as farmers. The Millars were weavers which made them almost invisible apart from a name! All the best with your research. i am so pleased that I managed to contact you to say thanks.

Thanks Sue, I do have Agnes in my tree but didnt have Jeannie Rankin Craig as a daughter. I have now added her and her husband Robert, which I will follow up! Have you got further back than John Rankin and Elisabeth Burnet, as regards the miller occupation?
      03:18 PM
Hi again Sue, by my calculations we are 5th cousins!

      Hello there Colin.
I only got as far as John Rankin and Elisabeth Burnet on that branch of the tree. I could get back one further generation on the Millar line, through maternal lines. Interestingly, there were Craigs in that branch too but from they were from the Neilston area.

Yes, we have a family connection... from the distant past! It's all interesting stuff isn't it?

I'm not sure you have seen any work of fellow researcher, HughMillar76, who is also related. He lives in the USA and has done quite a lot of work too on the Millar side of things if you are interested. He is another "cousin" of mine as my great grandfather and his grandfather (I think I have that right) were brothers.

Hi Sue, I've seen his trees online. Hope you don't mind but can you tell me your line from your G Grandfather. I've stuck you in under one of his sons but not sure what one, Robert, Andrew, John, Thomas or David? And of course your Fathers name. That would be great.
You may like to look at Rankins further back info I've given you. And I've came across the Millard from Neilston as well! Happy hunting keep in touch Colin

      HI Colin,
Both my grandfather and father are called Andrew Millar. Hugh, AKA Tim, in America's grandfather is Stewart Millar, brother of my G Grandfather.
I shall endeavour to see if I can research more with the Rankins too when I have the time in the next few days. Gardening awaits today! Spring is almost upon us here so we need to get the big jobs done before the weather really heats up. Family commitments tomorrow. Life is always full of things to do!! However, I find this all interesting so will have my nose in it again soon.
      All the best

      Hi again Colin
Thanks for the extra Rankin information you sent me in your first message. I have had only very limited time to investigate it yet due to lots of commitments here but hopefully that is easing off for now. Really interesting stuff though.
Due to their farming concerns, the Rankins generated more paperwork than some of the others in the trees. Mind you, my Mum's family turned out to have a convict who was sent out from Scotland in it so we know LOTS about that family too! Many court and newspaper records!
I think I have about another month or so on our current membership deal so plan to investigate things on all sides of the family more in that time. Thanks again for your help.
      Cheers
      Sue

      Hi Colin
Well, my subscription is now about to end on Tuesday so I thought I would once again email you to say thanks for your tips and all your work that you have shared. I have found the whole process of searching a really enjoyable experience.
Trying to find extra info from elusive sources such as old books has been fun. 2020 was a great time to do a lot of that work as there was very little else to do in the months of lockdown we all endured.
It is quite amazing to realize that we all have relatives, stemming from way back, spread all over the world and that we are all looking for the same details about the same people in our family history.
All the best to you and your family
      Take care
Sue (your very distant cousin in Australia)

Hi Sue thanks for your kind words.
I am still looking at the Rankin family and still trying to prove their links to the Cornmills of South Kilmarnock. As I've said previously, I have traced back to John Rankin and Sarah Findlay, Miller at Newmills, south of Kilmarnock, and another Rankin Family, William Rankin and Jean Sar or Saar in Crooked Holme, again south of Kilmarnock. I had previously traced back from David Rankin, Kilmarnock postmaster, him from 'History of Kilmarnock', but at that time could find no relationship to the Rankins of Wardneuk. I have now found a relationship in that David the Postmaster; Great grandparents were William Rankin and Jean Sar. I also know there's a link between all these Rankins and the Galt family living at Struthers Farm, as they are witnesses at births and marriages of each other. Oh well another few years of research will sort that out????? It's been great passing on info to you, and thanks for allowing me to see your research.
Do you think it would be an idea to talk to Tim in USA? if you want to keep in touch out of ancestry, my addresss is '(XXXXX@XXXX.XXX)' Best regards, Colin

Hi Sue, good to hear from you. A Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family.
Thanks for the family info, I've just added that to the tree!
Frank Beatty did come back to me, but up till now info from him has been limited.
We have had snow for nearly a week, not that deep though, the council didn't send a gritter up (We stay at the top of a hill which causes problems if the roads snow covered.)
We had -2° C yesterday. Braemar in the Cairngorms wet down to -17° C as well. They tell us this week it'll get warmer, hopefully.
Liz and I's booked to go to Gran Canaria on 6th January for a fortnight, so looking forward to that.
Anyway, please keep in touch and enjoy your Christmas
      All the best, Colin
