Notes about Elspeth Cairns

1. Ref: Scottish Coal Mining Ancestors, author Lindsay S. Reeks. Gateway Press, Baltimore 1986.
John, bp. 4 Jan. 1730, Scoonie p., res., coalhill [165]. M. 24 Nov. 1752, Elspet Cairns of Wemyss p. Also recorded 25 Nov. 1752, Wemyss p., John Archibald, Colier in Durie coal hill, and Elspeth Cairns in Methil coal hill, wit: Alexander Cairns, Wm. Archibald [166].
It is believed that this m. relates to the ancestor, as his first son is named Andrew, and the witness, Wm. Archibald, at his m. was likely his brother, since Wm. was also of Scoonie p. when he m. in Wemyss p. in 1736. Also, John was a colier of Durie coal hill, Scoonie p., when he m., and this is the same locality where his father earlier was reported as a resident.

    About the Book

This book is a work of over 30 years research of records of coalmining parishes of Scotland in the counties of Midlothian, Fife, West Lothian, East Lothian, Lanark, and Stirling; the counties of Northumberland and Durham in England, and a few areas of Australia.

The families include ANDERSON, ARCHIBALD, BLACK, BOYD, BROWN, CHEYNE, CRAWFORD, CUNNINGHAM, FLEUCKER, JACK, JOHNSTON, KING, LINDSAY, LOURIE, MILLER, MOFFAT, NEILSON, PENTLAND, PORTEOUS, REID, ROBERTSON, RUSSEL, SMITH, STEEL, WALKER, WILLIAMSON, WILSON, and others. Many of them are traced back well over 300 years. Each line, treated alphabetically, is fully documented with sources used, contains supportive evidence, and an index of complete names.
