ANGUISH. A variant form of Teutonic Inguis (q.v.), meaning "wise son." Some authors take it literally, from the vocabulary word, meaning "anguish, pain." It may sometimes represent Angus. In Arthurian legend, this is the name of the father of Iseult.
In Hanmer's Chronicle, King Arthur visits Ireland and converses with King Anguish, which painful title is precisely that which Henry VIII., in his correspondence, gives his brother-in-law, the Earl of Angus... (History of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884).
It is probable that the stem ing, inc, though its etymology is not yet explained, has the meaning of son, offspring, and is cognate with Eng. "young."...
... (Wis, sapiens) Old Germ. Inguis, 9th cent.-Eng. Anguish... (The Teutonic Name-System &c., Ferguson, 1864)
"I am of the country of Lyonesse, and my name is Tristram, [and I have] been wounded in a battle as I fought for a lady's right."
"Truly," said King Anguish, "ye shall have all the help in this land that ye may have here. But I let you wit in Cornwall I had a great loss as ever had king, for there I lost the best knight of the world, his name was Marhaus, a full noble knight, and knight of the Table Round;" and there he told Sir Tristram wherefore Sir Marhaus was slain. Sir Tristram made semblant [like] as he had been sorry, and better knew he how it was than the king. (The Boy's King Arthur, Malory-Lanier, 1880)
