Peter Brown & Isabel Archibald Pr. of m.1808 at Newton was on 28 Feb., and they were m. 15 Apr. 1808 at Newton p. [8]. The m. was also proclaimed 27 Feb. 1808, in Inveresk p., where it was indicated Peter Brown was a collier of Newton p. Witnesses were, Peter Wilson for man, and Andrew Archibald, for woman. Andrew Archibald likely to be her Father.
In the 1841 census for Millerhill, Newton p., Peter Brown is shown as a Coal Miner . With him resides his wife, Isabella Archibald, also a Coal Miner , and six children, Peter 11, Margaret, 15, Helen 15, and Christina 13, all coalminers, and Betsy 8, and Euphemia 7.
On 20 Dec. 1842, Newton KSM state that one shilling weekly be paid for Elizabeth Brown, residing with her grandfather, Peter Brown, at Millerhill [11]. This probably refers to Elizabeth Brown, who was bp. in Newton p. in 1832 [22], her father, Andrew, being buried in Newton p. in 1834 [15].
Newton KSM for 5 Jun. 1848, state the clerk was instructed to inform Peter Brown of Millerhill, that he, having withdrawn himself from attendance of divine worship, the session consider him no longer a member of the congregation [11]. It is possible that he joined another church, such as the Free Church of Musselburgh, since Newton KSM for 26 Nov 1849, indicate that his likely son, George, of Millerhill, had previously been a member of the Free Church of Musselburgh, and desired to be restored to Newton church [11].
In the 1851 census, Peter Brown and his wife, Isabella, lived alone in Easter Millerhill, Newton p. [12]. In Newton KSM for 5 Dec. 1856, the moderator said that Alexander Brown of Squaretown, Adam Jack, and Peter Brown, of Millerhill, were becoming infirm and not in favourable circumstances to enable them to keep up the regular payment of the Friendly Societies, of which they are members. The session agreed to allow payments be made out of session funds [1]
Friendly societies started in the Glasgow area in 1816. They consisted of colliers banded together for betterment of wages and aid for impoverished miners. Later they became involved in seeking benefits for illness and accidents, and sprang up throughout the coalfields of Scotland [14]
The 1861 census for Newton p., shows Peter Brown 75, formerly a Coal Miner , and his wife, Isabella, 73, continue to live in Millerhill, in a one-room cottage, with one or more windows [24]

    About the Book

This book is a work of over 30 years research of records of coalmining parishes of Scotland in the counties of Midlothian, Fife, West Lothian, East Lothian, Lanark, and Stirling; the counties of Northumberland and Durham in England, and a few areas of Australia.

The families include ANDERSON, ARCHIBALD, BLACK, BOYD, BROWN, CHEYNE, CRAWFORD, CUNNINGHAM, FLEUCKER, JACK, JOHNSTON, KING, LINDSAY, LOURIE, MILLER, MOFFAT, NEILSON, PENTLAND, PORTEOUS, REID, ROBERTSON, RUSSEL, SMITH, STEEL, WALKER, WILLIAMSON, WILSON, and others. Many of them are traced back well over 300 years. Each line, treated alphabetically, is fully documented with sources used, contains supportive evidence, and an index of complete names. Some information on Scottish family research, and on Scottish coalminers, is also given.

The book is 293 pages, hardcover, and is illustrated.
