    Volkert (Heringa) studeerde een tijdlang te Deventer, maar ging zich na zijn vaders dood toeleggen op het beheer van het familievermogen en op handel in grond en huizen. Daarnaast vond hij tijd om te reizen (bijvoorbeeld naar Engeland, waar hij zich een telescoop aanschafte), en om boeken, platen, landkaarten en schilderijen te lopen. In 1787 werd hij eigenaar van de Galamastate te Koudum, in het zuidwesten van Friesland. Nog in hetzelfde jaar kocht hij daar een stemdragende boerderij.
