    HOVENS (Daniël), geb. te Haarlem 10 Juni 1735, overl. te Rotterdam 4 Jan. 1795. Hij is in 1756 gehuwd met Sanneke Nieuwenhuijzen (1733-1787). Eerst is hij te Groningen voor den boekhandel opgeleid. Met Matthias van Geuns (dl. I, kol. 932 v.) en Allard Hulshoff (zie: dl. II, kol. 619 v.) bezocht hij de samenkomsten der Collegianten. Reeds op 21 Sept. 1755 werd hij leeraar der Doopsgezinden te Barsingerhorn en Kolhorn. Hij vertrok in 1757 naar Sneek, in 1763 naar Monnikendam, en was tot 1770 in de friesche gemeente te Zaandam. Op 11 Nov. 1770 deed hij intrede te Leiden. Hier had hij zich toen al op 5 Oct. 1770 laten inschrijven voor de studie in de godgeleerdheid. J.C. van Slee vermeldt dat op 9 Juni 1753 te Rijnsburg (bij onderdompeling) gedoopt is tot ‘lid van de Algemeene Christenheid: Daniël Hovens Hendriksz. tot Haarlem, gedoopt door Agge Roskam Kool’, en dat hij zelf aldaar ook gedoopt heeft op 13 Juli 1777 Cornelis van Putten.

    Daniël Hovens was doopsgezind predikant te Leiden. Hij stierf tijdens een uitstapje naar Rotterdam in 1795.
