    Leeghwater werd in 1575 geboren in het dorp De Rijp op het Schermereiland. Dat lag ingeklemd tussen twee enorme, almaar uitdijende Hollandse meren: het Beemster en het Schermer. Zijn vader Adriaen Symonsz was doopsgezind, net als de meeste inwoners van De Rijp, en verdiende de kost als timmerman en molenmaker. Hij leidde zijn zoon op in hetzelfde ambacht. Over de verdere scholing van Jan Adriaanszoon is niets bekend. De rest van zijn veelzijdige talent heeft hij waarschijnlijk op eigen houtje ontwikkeld.

    Adriaen Symonsz was timmerman en molenmaker in De Rijp, waar hij in 1594 het opzicht voerde over de eerste houten sluis die daar gelegd werd.
