    Simon Veen was zoon van eene bakkersweduwe uit Haarlem, die, hoewel klerk op een garenbleekerskantoor, uit liefhebberij bloemen zaaide. Hij ontwikkelde zich later tot een der grootste bloembollenkweekers van Kennermerland (noot van Ds H. Bakels). Hij was de eerste bloemkweeker die de zwarte tulpen wist te telen. De bloemkwekerij onder de naam van Gebroeders Veen & Cie. werd door Hendrik voortgezet.

    Simon Veen werd geboren te Haarlem op 5 mei 1748 en overleed te Haarlem op 5 september 1841. Hij was bloemenkweker te Haarlem (Baanlaan 2).
