Berent is eerder getrouwd Hoogezand 22-01-1741 met Hindrikje Ottens, afkomstig uit Kiel-Compagnie, overleden 1741/1748. Huwelijkscontract opgemaakt Veendam 12-02-1748. Getuigen aan bruids zijde: vader Balster Jans, “zijnde zulkes mede bewilligd van Grietje Swiers, de moeder van de bruidegom (!) volgens getuigenisse van de aanwezende” en broers Klaas Balsters en Pieter Balsters. Aan bruidegoms zijde: Otto Reinders, als grootvader en voormond van de minderjarige voorkinderen van de bruidegom, en Otto Jacobs (x Stijntje Swiers) als zwager van de bruidegom en voogd over de kinderen.
