    Carl Zernike senior was kleermaker. In 1909 was hij huisschilder. Dat wordt vermeld in de huwelijksakte van zijn zoon Johannes Wilhelmus Jacobus Zernike, maar het is niet bekend, of diens vader toen nog leefde.

    Het geslacht Zernike stamt uit Duitsland ten zuiden van Berlijn, en behoorde tot de Wenden. De stamvader die naar Nederland kwam was kleermaker. Volgens overlevering werden de voornamen afgewisseld per generatie, de naam van de vader was waarschijnlijk Anton Carl Friederich. De naam van de zoon Frits is afgeleid van Friedrich.

    Carl Friedrich August Zernike senior was afkomstig uit het Duitse Mekrow, een dorpje vlakbij Berlijn. De familie van Zernike senior heette officieel Czernikow. Ze woonden generatieslang in het grensgebied tussen Polen en Duitsland. Toen de kinderen bij één van de gebiedsverdelingen tussen Duitsland en Polen op een Duitse school terechtkwamen, werd de naam aangepast naar Zerniek om deze "Duitser" te laten klinken.
