    Dank zij bewaard gebleven papieren van de oudste, thans nog bestaande Hoornse boekhandel, die der firma Vermande Zonen, krijgen we een indruk van dit bedrijf in vroeger dagen. Lodewijk Vermande (1735-1809) vestigde zich in 1755 te Hoorn als boekhandelaar. In 1795 volgde Jan Vermande (1775-1850) hem op. Tevens was Jan Vermande collecteur der Staatsloterij.
