    Nathalie Henriette Adolphine Retel werd onderwijzeres. Op bijna 20-jarige leeftijd verbleef ze gedurende anderhalf jaar te Brussel om vervolgens in 1865 naar Leeuwarden te gaan, waar ze haast negen jaar zou wonen. Gedurende een paar maanden in 1867 keerde ze naar haar vader terug, toen haar broer Jan als korporaal-titulair te Kampen was overleden in de Garnizoensinfirmerie. Als hoofdonderwijzeres vestigde ze zich in 1874 te Zwolle om er les te geven aan de meisjesschool in de Bloemendalstraat. Vermoedelijk hebben Jurjen en zij elkaar daar leren kennen. Na het huwelijk vestigde het echtpaar zich aan de Oudestraat te Kampen, waar Jurjen sinds 1873 woonde. Nadat haar man was overleden, trok zij in september 1919 bij haar schoonzoon en kleinkind in, maar niet voor lang. Op 2 maart 1920 overleed zij. Themann en zijn stiefdochter Henriette Ontrop verlieten Kampen in 1923.
