    Jan Rients Muller is gedoopt in de Hervormde kerk van Wagenborgen op 14 november 1779 als zoon van Rient Jans, landbouwer te Wagenborgen, en Jantjen Willems. Hij overlijdt op 16 januari 1831 te Weener. Jan gaat in 1806 naar Midwolda. Daarna is hij van 1810 tot 1819 herbergier, cichoreifabrikant, grutter en boekweitmolenaar te Veendam, Oosterdiep, E 311. Vervolgens is hij boekweitmulder te Weener. Jan wordt doopsgezind. HIj trouwt op 31 maart 1810 te Midwolda (1e proclamatie), 2 mei 1810te Beerta (H.V.) met Nantje Luilef Koolman, geboren op 24 augustus 1789 als dochter van Luilof Harms, landbouwer te Beerta, no. 10, en Emke Olferts Koolman. Nantje overlijdt op 31 juli 1873 te Beerta.

    Zijn doopnaam was Jan Hindriks. Vermoedelijk is dat een verwijzing en vernoeming naar zijn grootvader. Later zal hij echter bekend staan als Jan Rients Muller.
