    Herman Gorter (Wormerveer, 26 november 1864 - Sint-Joost-ten-Node, 15 september 1927) was een Nederlandse dichter. Ook was hij medeoprichter van de Sociaal-Democratische Partij. Hij is vooral bekend geworden door zijn gedicht van epische lengte "Mei" (1889). De openingsregel van dit gedicht: "Een nieuwe lente en een nieuw geluid" is een staande uitdrukking geworden.

    Herman Gorter (roepnaam: Pans), socialistisch dichter en propagandist, is geboren te Wormerveer op 26 november 1864 en overleden te Brussel op 15 september 1927. Hij was de zoon van Simon Gorter, doopsgezind predikant en letterkundige, en Johanna Catharina Lugt, pensionhoudster. Op 17 juli 1890 trad hij in het huwelijk met Louise Catherine Cnoop Koopmans. Dit huwelijk bleef kinderloos. Toen hij trouwde, was hij leraar aan het gymnasium.
