    Volgens de huwelijksakte van hun dochter Roelfina Engelsman, die trouwde met Eilt Hotze, zijn haar ouders op zee verongelukt in 1857. Op 7 januari 1858 worden het huis en twee stukken groenland van het overleden echtpaar Engelsman-Bus verkocht door hun kinderen en erfgenamen. Op 14 januari 1858 vindt een veiling plaats "van allerhande Huismeubels" ten huize van wijlen Hindrik Berends Engelsman aan het Beneden-Oosterdiep te Veendam.
