    th: 75%;">Het was op zaterdagavond 9 januari 1886 dat Simon Kwak zijn vrouw in de schuur aantrof. Het was al donker, en in het schijnsel van de lantaarn zag hij de verwondingen aan haar hals en de verminkingen op haar gezicht. Langzaam drong het tot Simon door dat zijn vrouw op een vreselijke manier om het leven was gebracht. De dood van de 22-jarige moeder van een zoontje van twee jaar veroorzaakte een grote golf van verontwaardiging in Heenvliet, Nieuwesluis en Zwartewaal.Na de ontdekking van het lichaam werd burgemeester Korteweg erbij geroepen, evenals de geneesheer Van der Minne. Er werd een onderzoek ingesteld, dat zondag werd voortgezet door uit Rotterdam afkomstige rechercheurs. Er werden echter geen aanknopingspunten gevonden die naar een eventuele dader leidden.

    Maandagochtend kwam er meer licht op de zaak, toen de landbouwer B. van Dijk zich bij de burgemeester meldde en vertelde wat hij van zijn arbeider A. Bevaart had gehoord. Op zaterdagavond had Bevaart namelijk een kort bezoek gekregen van zijn 22-jarige neef Jan Bevaart. Jan was behoorlijk overstuur, want, zo verzekerde hij zijn oom, hij had zojuist de buurvrouw met afgesneden hals in de schuur aangetroffen. Jan gedroeg zich verdacht en had zelfs bloed op zijn gezicht, zodat hij zijn neef naar huis stuurde en twijfelde wat hij moest doen.     De burgemeester nam direct maatregelen en gaf enkele agenten de opdracht de vermoedelijke dader op te sporen en te arresteren. Terwijl de agenten onder toezicht van de burgemeester en rijksveldwachter Borger het huis van A. Bevaart tevergeefs doorzochten, kwam postbode Van der Linde langs. De burgemeester gaf hem opdracht een oogje in het zeil te houden, maar bedacht toen een plan om de verblijfplaats van Jan zonder al te veel ophef te achterhalen. De postbode moest zich naar het huis van de ouders van Jan begeven en voorwenden dat hij een brief voor de jongen had. Van der Linden trof de jongen inderdaad in een kamertje aan, liggend op bed. Jan werd voorgehouden dat de brief door hem persoonlijk bij de burgemeester moest worden afgehaald, zodat hij zich snel aankleedde en met de postbode en de veldwachter naar het raadhuis liep. Het zal onwaarschijnlijk zijn dat Jan op dat moment nog geen argwaan koesterde.

Hij had Hester in de schuur willen dwingen tot seks, maar ze had geweigerd. In kille woede had hij de vrouw daarop met een broodmes vermoord. Diezelfde maandagmiddag nog werd Jan overgebracht naar de gevangenis in Rotterdam, een half jaar later zou hij in de cel aan tuberculose overlijden. Hester van Marion werd onder grote belangstelling begraven en de gemoederen onder bevolking bleven nog lange tijd onrustig.
