Richard Smith, son of William Smith (and Bettie Eunice Ritchie)of eastern Virginia, came to Perry County by way of Pound Gap around 1792. He married Alicia Combs, daughter of Nick (Danger) Combs in 1794. They settled on Lotts Creek, just above what is now the Perry County line (Knotts County). It is known as the old John Smith place but when John moved there it was called the Richard Smith's place.

Richard Smith is buried in the Smith family Gravyard at Ary in 1836. Sam Smith of Ary has his bible, which is still in good condition. It has entries of Smith births and deaths back to 1816.
Richard was a primative Baptist Preacher for 45 years. He was said to have delivered hell fire sermons and after the service was over would be seen sneaking out back and taking a swig of his whiskey.
He settled in Lotts Creek area before moving to Pigeon Roost on Troublesome Creek at Ary.
