Notes about Sir Anthony Browne IV

Son of Sir Knight Anthony Browne and Alice Gage. Father of Anthony I 1552 and Mary 1555.

Midhurst Church originally stood within the grounds of Midhurst Castle. Called the church of St. Mary Magdalene and St. Denys, it was mentioned in 1291 and later in 1367 as standing, "in a place called Courtgene". The castle was dismantled by the Bishop of Durham sometime between 1284 and 1311. The earlier owners being the de Bohum family who abandoned the castle in favour of Cowdray in 1280.

Until the reformation, the church was a chapelry to Easebourne Priory and the chaplain were appointed by the Prioress of the Benedictine Nuns. The name St. Denys was added sometime in the 16th century and is likely to have some connection with the de Bohum family. Little is known of St. Denys who is the traditional patron saint of France, was the first Bishop of Paris and suffered martyrdom in the 3rd Century.

The interior of the church has undergone much restoration and change and little evidence exists of its Medieval heritage. Consisting of chancel and nave flanked by aisles on both sides, the church was largely rebuilt in the Perpendicular style in 1422, towards the end of Henry V reign. (Midhurst church records)

Find A Grave contributor Todd Whitesides noted: He was born Nov. 29, 1528, and died at West Horsley, Surrey on Oct. 19, 1592.
