    Beste Fons! Douwe is een week geleden heel erg ziek geworden. Longontsteking met pleuris. Al dadelijk zijn de verschijnselen zoo geweest, dat er angst was. Hij is minder en minder geworden en eindelijk is hij van middag zacht gestorven. Hij heeft niet geweten dat zijn gelukkig leven uit zou zijn. Wies, Moeder, Jo Jonker en ik waren er, en we blijven nog eenige dagen op Meerenberg.

    Gorters éen jaar oudere broer Douwe was in 1890 als arts aangesteld in het gesticht Meerenberg te Santpoort-Bloemendaal. Hij had zich verloofd met Jo Jonker. - In de eerste boekuitgave met nieuw werk van Gorter die er na deze jaren zou verschijnen (De school der Poëzie, 1897) komt onder de titel Doodsgezicht een gedicht van acht regels voor, waarvan de laatste luidt: ‘Mijn broer. Hij staat in zijn oude lacheglans.’ De foto van Douwe Gorter (zie illustratie) lijkt deze regel te illustreren.
