- Hij was de eerste hoofdredacteur van het Algemeen Doopsgezind weekblad;
Van 1932-1943 maakte ds Gorter deel uit van de redactie van het Doopsgezind Jaarboekje.
 Gorter was één van de oprichters van het Hollands Doopsgezind Emigrantenbureau.
 Hij was voorman van de Barchembeweging.
 Hij hield talloze V.P.R.O.-toespraken, gebundeld in “Voor de oude dag” (1953) en “Tegen d’avond” (1957).
 In 1948 was hij voorzitter van de commissie Kanselboek ten dienste van de Doopsgezinde Gemeenten in Nederland.
 Met zijn vriend Dr C.E. Hooykaas was hij hoofdredacteur van De Stroom: Vrijzinnig Godsdienstig Weekblad.
 Redacteur bij “De Opbouw”. In april 1934 samengevoegd met de weekbladen "De Stroom", en "Vrijzinnig Protestantenblad". (Het weekblad is een uitgave van Van Loghum Slaterus' uitgeversmaatschappij; redacteuren o.a.: J.A. de Koning, D. Drijver, S.H.N. Gorter, F. Kleijn, W.R.M. Noordhoff, A. Trouw, W. Verkade, W.J. Wegerif, G.J. Honederdaal en N. Blokker.)
