LifeSketch: Walter, who was knighted by 1384, served in the Parliaments of Nov. 1380, Nov. 1384 and 1395. He was betrothed to June of 1362 to Margaret and was married in 1366. During this time Walter was under a cloud of being accused of poaching on the parks of the widow Joan Coupland but nothing seems to have come of it. Upon the death of his father, Thomas, he inherited all the family estates. His administrative career began with his appointment as collector of taxes for Westmorland and thereafter became deputy sheriff of Westmorland in 1384 as had three of his forebears before him. He encountered considerable difficulties when he was named as an executors for the estate of his friend and neighbor, William Lord Windsor. He was in part liable with the other two executors for certain sums of money until the ownership of the deceased's estate could be cleared up. This involved resolution between the deceased wife Alice Perrers (mistress of Edward III) and other family members. He encountered continued financial challenges because of the area of his holdings and the harassment from across the Scots border. Because of the devastation by the Scots royal letters were sent in 1391 to the Exchequer to allow a reduction in the sums charged to the account of Sir Walter, who at the time was in office as escheator of Cumberland, Westmorland and Northumberland. After his last term at Parliament he remained a member of the Westmorland bench for 10 years. Upon his death in March 1408 he left at least 5 sons by his first marriage and a widow named Alice.
