According to Miriam Braz, he was the most educated among his brothers and sisters. He joined the "Shomer Tzair" and couldn't stand the fact that the family was "exploiting" workers. He left for a kibbutz (Ein Shemer?) and distanced himself from the family. At some point brothers Alexander and Aba-Yosef wanted to help him by buying him an apartment (at that point he had already left the Kibbutz) although Aba-Yosef treated that as a loan, not a contribution...
