Clearly, as a student, he had studied law.

During the war he was "ondergedoken", i.e., hiding in a private house somewhere in the Netherlands. If caught by the Germans, he would be most likely be sent to fight for the Third Reich. The fate of his hosts would be worse. I don't know if he was active in the resistance. I have some personal stories of this period which I have heard from *my* mother-in-law and *his* cousin, Arike van Egmond, who was ten years younger than him. She was born in 1926 and he in 1916, so in, say, 1942, they were respectively 26 and 16.
