Aaltje verliet op 12 april 1959 in overspannen toestand het ouderlijk huis. Op 15 april kwam het bericht van de gemeentepolitie Zwolle dat haar lichaam was gevonden in het Almelosekanaal in Zwolle. Ze bleek zelfmoord te hebben gepleegd.
