လGerard Hovens Gréve was aanvankelijk boekhandelaar. In 1866 verstigde hij in de Woldstraat een drukkerij. Al spoedig besloot hij een krant te gaan uitgeven. Hij verzorgde zelf de acquisitie door te voet de naburige dorpen te bezoeken om, bij voorkeur op openbare verkopingen, de bevoking op te wekken abonnee te worden of advertenties te platsen. Het eerste nummer van deze krant, de Opregte Steenwijker Courant, verscheen op 5 juli 1869.
In 1893 verhuisde het bedrijf naar de Oosterstraat. Reeds een jaar later werd de zaak verplaatst naar een pand in de Onnastraat. Daarna berustte de leiding bij zijn zoon Koenraad. Op 15 juli 1908 riep de onderneming de naamloze vennootschap ဘN.V. Drukkerij Hovens Gréveမ in het leven. Deze N.V. werd 13 oktober 1972 omgezet in een besloten vennootschap. De uitgifte van de Opregte Steenwijker Courant werd in 1957 overgedragen aan de firma Boom te Meppel.ဝ [D Buiter, De oudste prentbriefkaarten van Steenwijk, Historische Mededelingen jrg 26, 2009, nr 3, p.21]
