Dirk werd niet opgeroepen voor de Nationale Militie.
Dirk was behalve zelfstandig boekdukker ook winkelier in galanterieën in de Oosterstraat. In 1905 droeg hij zijn zaak over aan zijn zoon Adolf, die een nieuwe winkel opende in de Woldstraat.
