လIn 1879 vestigde hij in de Woldstraat een zaak in galanterieën, kinderspeelgoed en luxe en huishoudelijke artikelen. Aan het eind van de eeuw verhuisde hij naar een pand aan de Markt, waar hij een nieuwe winkel met een groter assortiment inrichtte. Hij ging toen ook glas, prselein, aardewerk en bijouterieën verkopen. Om die grotere winkel te kunnen exploiteren, sloot hij een compagnonschap met Adriaan Jacob Velsen, die gehuwd was met zijn dochter Trijntje. (...)
Hogewind had aan zijn zaak een fotografisch atelier verbonden. (...) Aanvankelijk hield hij zich vooral bezig met portretfotografie. In de periode 1901-1904 gaf hij een viertal verschillende series prentbriefkaarten met Steenwijker stadsgezichten uit.
Barend overleed op 2 juni 1931 te Steenwijk. De zaak in het pand Markt 30, die sinds het midden van de jaren twintig werd geëxploiteerd onder de naam Maison Hogewind, werd voorgezet door Adriaan Jacob Velsen. [D.
