In 1895 werd Cornelis afgekeurd voor de Nationale Militie wegens een te kleine gestalte. Blijkbaar is hij daarna nog gegroeid, want hij dient als plaatsvervanger vanaf 3 maart 1898 bij het 5e Regiment Infanterie.
