Notes about Maria "Marjan" Hoebee

Marjan was op de verkeerde tijd in Batavia. Toen de Japanners Nederlands Indië in bezit hadden genomen begonnen ze in 1942/1943 alle Eurpeanen en andere uitheemse inwoners in kampen te interneren. De mannen in mannenkampen en de vrouwen en kinderen in vrouwenkampen. Marjan werd geïnterneerd in kamp Tjideng.
Dit kamp bestond uit huizen in een afgegrendelde woonwijk ten westen van het centrum van Batavia, tussen de Tjidengweg en de spoorlijn naar de haven van Batavia Tandjong Priok, op de stadskaart ter hoogte van het Koningsplein. De geïnterneerden werden ondergebracht in "nomale" huizen aan "normale" straten. Marjan kwam in blok 1 aan de Laan Trivelli 111. Dit was een van de bredere straten, die dwars door het kamp liep van de Tjidengweg naar de spoorlijn.
Aanvankelijk stonden de kampen onder burgerlijk gezag en was het leven nog enigszins draaglijk. De gevangenen mochten zelf koken, kerkdiensten houden en hun eigen kampleiding kiezen. Toen het beheer werd overgenomen door het militaire gezag was hetmet deze vrijheden snel gedaan. Het aantal geïnterneerden werd opgevoerd van 2000 naar 10500, terwijl het grondgebied van het kamp, oorsronkelijk een vierkante kilometer met driekwart werd verminderd. Door gebrek aan voedsel, medicijnen en hygiëneen een overvloed aan ongedierte (wandluizen, kakkerlakken en ratten) ging de toestand van de bewoners snel achteruit. Waren er tot 1 maart 1944 nog maar 28 sterfgevallen, in de periode 1 maart 1944 tot 1 augustus 1945 waren dat er 406 en tussen 1augustus 1945 en 15 oktober van datzelfde jaar overleden nog eens 106 mensen.
In april 1944 werd een lijst opgemaakt van alle bewoners, waarop voorkomen Metselaar M., 28 jaar, met een kind van 2 jaar. In augustus 1945 werd opnieuw een naamlijst van alle bewoners opgemaakt. op deze lijst komen beiden niet meer voor. Op 28 december 1944 zijn 20 vrouwen van Tjideng overgeplaatst naar kamp Grogol en op 30 december daaraanvolgend nog eens 100 zieke vrouwen en zieke kinderen. Mogelijk waren Marjan en haar zoonte hier bij.
Kamp Grogol was oorspronkelijk een zwakzinnigen-inrichting gebouwd op een opgespoten terrein in een moerassig gebied in het noord-westen van Batavia.
