Child(ren):
People: Johannes Vlooswijk, Willem van Dam. Date: January 28, 1733. Reference: U172a14 act 14. Subject: Lease.
Johannes takes over the lease of 44.5 morgen land in Hoge Weide from his wife Engeltje Spruijt. She is not mentioned in this document. Instead Johannes is recorded as the land’s user. The lease is for only 1 year, costing Fl 600 to be paid in two instalments. This time the Balije St Catharina is represented by Willem van Dam, its treasurer and member of the Utrecht States.
People: Johannes Vlooswijk, Adrianus van Dijk. Date: January 22, 1734. Reference: U1845a3 act 99. Subject: Lease.
Johannes Vlooswijk leases over 70 morgen of land spread over different plots from Adrianus van Dijk. A) 10 morgen orchard and meadow located in Overeind, B) 15 morgen land located in Overeind, behind the owner’s house and the Catholic church to the north, C) 16 morgen crop land and meadow, total of 41 morgen land. The last plot includes an orchard and reed land adding up to 3 morgen which Adrianus keeps for himself. All told 38 morgen land, at Fl 12 a morgen for 7 years. The lease on the land starts on January 1, 1834, i.e. after the lease in Hoge Weide expired. The lease on the house and outbuilding starts on May 1. Johannes also leases two plots of land which Adrianus van Dijk was leasing himself: D) 11 morgen land from De Geer, and E) 20 morgen land
from Abbema. The rent for this land is also Fl 12. In principle the duration is also 7 years, but Adrianus’ lease from Abbema would expire in 4 years. There is a promise that Johannes can continue the lease if Van Dijk’s does. All told 71 morgen or almost 57 hectares of land costing a total of Fl 852 a year.
People: Johan Buijzerd, Arien Wilschut, Johannes Vlooswijk. Date: March 31, 1736. Reference: U186a13 act 41. Subject: Lease.
The land Theunis van Cuyck leased, his widow Engeltje Spruijt then took over and passed on to her new husband, Johannes Vlooswijk, is transferred to Arien Wilschut. Johannes’ lease expired on December 31, 1735. Johannes and Engeltje moved to Jutphaas.
People: Johannes Vlooswijk, Adrianus van Dijk. Date: January 20, 1742. Reference: U139a25 act 5. Subject: Lease.
Johannes extends the lease of land from Adrianus van Dijk. The document was drawn up by a new solicitor, and a bit better legible than the first lease. The lease concerns A) a farmhouse, outbuildings and 10 morgen orchard, crop land and meadow in Overeind with Wijnestein to the northwest, B) 15 mergen land also in Overeind with the Catholic church to the north and C) 16 morgen crop land and meadow, which includes an orchard and reed land Van Dijk keeps to himself. The three plots add up to 38 morgen. Then there is D) 11.5 morgen crop land and meadow Van Dijk himself was leasing from De Geer, and E) 20 morgen crop land and meadow Van Dijk was leasing from Abbema lord of Woudenberg. The land sub-leased from De Geer is also subject to a tithe, which Johannes has to pay. This clause was not included in the first contract, which probably explains the lower rent: all told FL 780 a year (vs. Fl 852). The total amount of land is also less, 68.5 morgen instead of 71. One condition is that Johannes can cut and prune the willow and alder trees, properly though, cutting them himself, and keep the wood. Should fruit trees die the landlord keeps the wood and replaces the trees. The tenant also maintains the dykes, dams, waterways and paths. He must keep all buildings weather proof (i.e. enclosed by glass and roof). And the dung that falls on the land stays there. The land must be improved and not deteriorated.Johannes Vlooswijk signed Johannes van Vlooswijk, and he has one of the fanciest-looking signatures among the Vlooswijk and Noordeloos. Except one, the signature on the lease he signed in 1742, two
years before his death, betrays a man who had problems holding a quill (the one below). Most Vlooswijk signed Van Vlooswijk, but the records most often register them without the van.Johannes is a tenant farmer, who probably met his wife Engeltje Spruijt working on her first husband’s land. He marries Engeltje 8 months after Theunis van Cuyck’s death. The man from Jutphaas south of Utrecht then moves to Lage Weide north of Utrecht, but the couple does not stay there. The first document featuring Johannes is from 1733 and is about him signing a one-year lease of 44.5 morgen land, taking over the lease Engeltje had signed in 1730. The couple was already planning to move to Jutphaas. From January 1, 1734 onwards Johannes leases 71 morgen land from Adrianus van Dijk. Johannes died in 1744 and Engeltje continues that lease until she dies about 1767.
There are no documents about wills, estates, debts, disputes, etc.; only lease contracts. So for now, little can be said about Johannes himself. However, leasing 70 morgen of land means that he was a knowledgeable farmer, and Engeltje’s continuation of that lease also means that she was a knowledgeable farmer.
