A letter from Birdie in 1916 says she "hadn't yet seen Etta's sister"
in San Francisco.
Tillie is said to have gone to California with brother Albert and his
wife Eva after Albert's marriage.
Louis is said to have "left" Tillie at some point. The following
letters may be written by Tillie as a single mom:
2 Feb 1931 letter to Norma: "...Your father wrote me a letter on May
22, 1930. As I asked him for the payment on my note at that time...he
had enough insurance to cover all his debts including my note...My
limbs are still bothering me. But hope before long I will be able to
be around again...Albert wrote and told me about your father..."
5 Feb 1932 letter to Norma: "...It is sure wonderful of you all to
send me that" [$10] on the note. Goes on not to hold them
responsible for their father's and Hilma's debt. "...I was a whole
lot worse off than you are. I didn't have a cent and three children
on my hands. And here I am at the top... I just received the message
about father passing. I am so sad (and I can't be there).
24 Mar 1932 letter to Norma: "...Norma, take my advice. Don't marry
a poor man unless he has a future. I have always been poor and always
worked like h___. No thanks for any thing I do. I always will have
to work. I have to try to help people out but always got stung in
some way... Norma, I am going to have a lot of nerve now asking you
something. I really ought to have asked your Father this. Hilma had
a diamond ring. I am wondering if you would let me have that for the
money your Father and Hilma borrowed from me. I feel I really should
have some thing if she had anything. I am afraid you can't afford to
send me the money. And if you would sell the ring you wouldn't get
much for it."
3 Apr 1932 letter to Norma: "...I have the same trouble as my father
[Oscar] had with his limbs (running sores)..." Refers a lot to "Beth"
in her letters. Mentions Ralph, Lester and Earle. Is there a son
named Earle? "...Earle sure has a darling baby...Beth will send you a
picture of him...I like Beth so very much. We get along just fine. I
like all my girls but know Beth better than the other two...I am sure
surprised Ellen asked you for Hilm's ring. I am sure I wouldn't have
done so. If it hadn't been cause I helped them out. I asked Hilma
for security on the note but she got very angry. I still have the
letters she wrote me. I didn't do it to be mean. I wanted
protection. But they couldn't give it...But I have forgiven her long
ago. We all have our faults...I don't know what is the matter back
there. Albert don't like Ellen and it doesn't sound as you like her
very well either. Well I don't hardly know her as I haven't been with
her for so darn many years...We have lived here 12 years, not too bad.
[Norma writes a note on the outside of the envelope: "More about
that ring. Golly, even Aunt Ellen wanted it. What a lousy bunch of
sisters. Sure glad we did it the way we did!"/CP]
19 Apr 1932 letter to Norma: "...I received the ring OK. Many thanks
for same. I took it down to the jewelry store and had it appraised...
the stone has a very noticeable flam(sp?) in it. So all it is worth
is $120...the stone is a large one. But then I value it more than
that on account of Hilma wearing it. It made me feel sad when I
opened it and looked at it. As it brought Hilma back in my mind... I
think Earle and his wife are going by themselves. Of course all young
folks should live by them selves after they are married. I will be
very lonely after they are gone. As I sure will miss the baby. But I
have gone through so many sad things in my days, guess I can stand
this also.
1 Jan 1933 letter to Norma: Lists all her Christmas gifts. "...was
out to a New Years Party. Got home this morning at 4 o'clock. We
sure had a swell time. Lots to eat and drink, dance and play cards.
Does this sound like 52 years old?... I sent you a package... not able
to send much as my work has been slack. So I did the best I could..."
[Norma writes on the envelope: "Bess and I were there summer of
'33."/CP]
