Notes for IRIN # 639, Robert Austen
Listed as a "Master, London) 1854-1857

Clarified in August, 2000 by Dennis Austen, Australia, that Nellie's parents were Robert and Sarah Ann Durden, as mentioned. Robert's parents are yet a little unclear. Dennis reports that this Robert Austen was a "master london" [need to clarify with Dennis] between 1854-1857.

Good morning, Marty (Oram) [from Chuck Pilcher],
Marion Uren in Australia is your cousin too, a third cousin actually.
Elizabeth Austen who is our great-grandmother (Franklin Preble Pilcher’s mother, who married William Donald Pilcher), and Robert Austen who is Marion’s great-grandfather), were siblings. William and Elizabeth came to America around 1850.

Robert (and wife Sarah) both died in England around 1870 and left Marion’s father (Richard Austen) an orphan at age 7. Richard moved to Australia as a young man, probably around 1885 or so.

From Marion Uren, Australia:
My G.Grandfather was Robert Austen, and married Sarah Durden, and is buried in the churchyard of St. Leonard's church in Hythe, in Kent.England. St. Leonard's is a lovely old Norman church that dates back to 1080.and looks over the English Channel. If you ever go there, the grave is just inside the back gate, to the right. He is buried with Sarah and Sarah's parents. They both died at 46 and 47 and my Grandfather was only seven when he was orphaned. He joined the army as a bandsman at 16 and came to Australia after spending some time in India. His sisters apparently went to U.S. He had nine children, and Dennis is the only son of the youngest, and I am the second daughter of the eldest. One of my uncles had Pilcher as a second name.

Dear Chuck,

I am sorry I have take so long to answer your question about what relation I am to Dennis. I have been running around again.!!!!! (And my elder daughter and I are off to Italy on 16th October)!!!!!!!

Dennis and I are first cousins. My Dad (Richard Austen) was the eldest of his family of nine, and Dennis's Dad was the youngest.

Dad's father was also Richard, and his father Robert, is buried in Hythe in the grounds of the old Norman church (St Leonard's)  datong back to 1080. It looks down over the English Channel, and on a clear day the coastline of France is visible. Perhaps you have been there?.

To-day I took out the family tree again and I did not realise there are so many Pilcher's.

I would love to hear from the girl from the Gold Coast. [Wendy Ward / CAP]

A long time ago I mentioned that perhaps you might make a trip down here, and I am wondering if you received it. No doubt you live a very busy life.

With love,
Marion.

Down here we are following you coming election with great interest.
