    A blacksmith by trade who immigrated from Holland with his wife Susanna to Franklin, Wisconsin in 1849 and had eight children by 1860, he enlisted in 1861 and served with Co F, 27th Wisconsin Infantry at Vicksburg and other battles up and down the Mississippi. He fell ill in 1863 and was hospitalized at Benton Army Hospital in St Louis, where he passed away.
