Origin [ edit ]Henry III was a son of King Johan I and of Eleonora of Aragón (1358-1382) .

Biography [ edit ]Hendrik already succeeded his father in 1390 when he unexpectedly died after a fall of a horse. Abusing his minority, the quarreling nobility unleashed a civil war in the kingdom of Castile , but the young, physically weak king was able to restore order surprisingly quickly.

In the Bayonne Convention of March 1388, it was decided that Hendrik would marry Catherine of Lancaster . Johan I gave them both the title Prince of Asturias , a title that has since been transferred to the successors of the kingdom of Castile, and later to that of the Kingdom of Spain.

Hendrik was only nine years old at the time of the treaty. The marriage with Catharina was formally completed in 1393, and ended the conflict between the dynasty of Peter I of Castile (child of Alfons XI and Maria of Portugal), and on the other hand that of Henry II of Castile (unreal child of Alfons). XI andEleonora Núñez de Guzmán Ponce de León ).

During his reign, the crown of Castile gained strong power, especially because Henry III succeeded in reducing the influence of the nobility, supported by the emerging cities. He was also successful in his foreign policy, partly through his fight against the Moors and through a favorable peace with Portugal . The Norman Jean de Béthencourt conquered the Canary Islands in 1403 and placed himself under the liege of Henry III with his conquered territory.

Progeny [ edit ]María (1401 - 1458), later married to Alfons V of Aragón .

Catherine of Castile (1403 - 1439), also called Catalina, later married to Henry of Aragon .

Johan (1405 - 1454), heir to the throne
