Notes about Edward Thomas

Edward Thomas settled at the Forest, a plantation in St. Stephens' parish on the edge of the Fairforest Swamp, 3 or 4 miles west of Moncks Corner, near the Stoney Landing, in South Carolina. He owned l ands in various parts of the state in St. John's, St. Stephens', and St. James' Parishes. He served in the Yemasee War and was wounded in a fight with the Indians at a place which was called Baker's Savannah in 1715. He was appointed Justice of the Peace of Berkeley County by the governor on June 15, 1734. Ramsay's History of South Carolina describes him as a somewhat whimsical person living in complete solitude at his plantation for 15 years, walking so constantly up and down his piazza that he wore a path in the boards. Then suddenly his mode of life changed, he visited all his friends, went over to England, and figured as a beau and man of society. Being about to return to Carolina he was seized with an attack of "gout in the stomach" and died in 1783 at the age of 90.
