James Mikell, brother of Major John and Barnett Mikell died without having married. He was granted a commission as Deputy Surveyor General of South Carolina in 1766. He received a grant of land of 47 acres on the Peedee River in 1768. See copy of Plat. On May 16, 1772 John Mikell was administrator of estate of James Mikell, Barnett Mikell was a witness. The inventory included one Surveyor's chain.
John Mikell, planter, of Craven County is not related to the Mikell's of Edisto Island. On Aug 25, 1770,, he bought 100 acres on the Great Pee Dee River from John Still (M.C.D.R. No. 3-433) and April 26, 1774, John Mikell with Ann his wife sold these same 100 acres to Abel Kolph (R. No. 4-498 M.C.O.). A deed was recorded 12 Mar 1785, witnessed by John Mikell, Jr for 100 acres of land in Welch's Tract on PeeDee River, dated 03 Apr 1777.

This John Mikell saw service in the Revolution, evidently had a son John and is occasionally to be found on jury lists, always in Cheraw district. John Mikell with his brother William and a sister Mary are mentioned in Gregg's History of the Old Cheraws, and is evidently the John mentioned above.
Major John Mikell and Capt. (Alex) McIntosh were on Black Creek at a point nearest Society Hill (S.C.) in 1781-82 in Lt. Col. Lemuel Benton's Regiment, Commander of Cheraw Militia of St. David's Parish. (Ref. History of Old Cheraws by Bishop Alex. Gregg p. 387-389.)
