Dr. William Hume was educated at home by tutors on a rice plantation at Goose Creek, South Carolina on the Santee River. He graduated from Yale and took a medical degree in New York. He studied in Par is and London. While in England, Dr. Hume married Catherine Lucas and later her sister, Ellen Jane Lucas. Their father was Jonathan Lucas, inventor of the rice mill.
He was deligated to be the sole guardian of The Citadel during the Civil War . . .at the time Yankee troops arrived in Charleston. He was ordered to surrender to Federal Troops when they finally invaded the city on February 18, 1865. The Federals held the venerable old professor as a hostage in the Citadel until 2:00 AM for fear the Confederates would destroy the place with a hidden bomb.
