Notes about Bernard Schenckingh

Bernard Schenckingh came to South Carolina before 1672 from Barbados. His children were born in South Carolina, but baptized in Barbados . He kept close ties with Barbados. Warrants for land show 270 acres in "some convenient place" given to Mr. Bernard Schinking on 18 October 1680. Court records of Feb 1704 show Benjamin, Elizabeth, Catherine and Amarinthia fighting Hannah (wife of Hugh N. Grange) for the lands of Bernard and Elizabeth. He died before 23 Jul 1692. Sheriff of Berkeley County, a Proprietor's deputy, Member of the Grand Council. In 1687, one of seven named to a committee to frame a new code of laws for the colony. In 1688 received land grant as Barnard Schenckingh.

List of inhabitants of Christ Church, St. Michael's, Barbados on Jan. 2, 1679 list Barnard's children as Elizabeth 8, Katherine 7, Amarintia 5, and Benjamin 7 months.
