Emigrando para o Brasil, com o irmão mais veiho, Manuel Leite Ribeiro (falecido em São João del-rei' em 1773) teve José Leite Ribeiro lavras de ouro no Rio das Mortes, la- vouras de cana e cereais e fazenda de criar.
Foi algum tempo socio do Capitão Francisco José Teixei- ra (1750-1787) lambem português. Em 1799 ainda minerava como "mineiro da: fabrica avultada" tendo como socio seu fi- lho o Capitão Manuel Ferreira Leite e o Tenente Joaquim do Rego Barros. Requereram naquele milésimo sessenta da& no veio do Rio Preto e no de diversos ribeirões deste afluente, com quadras e sobre-quadras, o que lhes foi deferido pelo Guarda-Mor do Distrito do Rio do Peixe, Francisco José Alves, a 13 de novembro de 1799. Faleceu opulento em S. João d'el-Rei, a 4 de outubro dc 1801. Tanto ele como D. Escolástica foram dos maiores benfeitores da linda igreja de S. Francisco de Assiz em S. João d'el-Rei.

José nasceu na Freguesia de Santana do Barroso no Termo da Vila de Guimarães, Arcebispado de Braga, filho de Francisco Leite Ribeiro e Izabel Ferreira.

Ainda solteiro, começou a minerar ouro no Rio das Mortes e formou a Fazenda Palmital do Rio Preto, em Nossa Senhora de Nazareth, freguesia de Aiuruoca, termo e Comarca de São João del Rei. Lá plantava cana, cereais e criava gado, em paralelo à mineração.

José e Escolástica possuíam também casa em São João del Rei onde eram irmãos da venerável Ordem Terceira de São Francisco, cuja igreja ajudaram a construir.

Em 1799, José requereu 60 datas no Rio Preto e em seus afluentes, que lhe foram dadas em 13 de novembro do mesmo ano pelo Guarda Mor do Distrito do Peixe, Francisco José Alves.

Já viúva, em sua casa em São João del Rei, com frente para a rua Direita e para a rua de São Francisco, Escolástica ditou seu testamento aos 18-04-1811. Viveria ainda muitos anos viivendo em sua Fazenda Palmital, vindo a falecer aos 25-6-1823 e foi sepultada na Capela da Ordem Terceira de São Francisco, conforme sua vontade.

José e Escolástica tiveram, segundo testamento e inventário de Escolástica (neste) doze filhos, sendo dois falecidos antes da mãe deixando geração.
