Por ser médico, Antonio dos Santos Clemente Filho percebeu rapidamente que seu segundo filho, Zeca, nascera com síndrome de Down.
No começo, não sabia como dizer à mulher, Jolinda, a Jô, e proibiu que lhe contassem, com medo de sua reação. Ela só foi descobrir após levá-lo ao neurologista.
"Em 1961, quando o meu filho tinha 13 anos, fundei a Apae (Associação dos Pais e Amigos do Excepcional). Nosso objetivo era sair das mãos de um sem-número de ignorantes", Jô escreveu nesta Folha, em 2006. Antonio, conhecido como dr. Clemente, engajou-se na luta da mulher.
Foi o impulso médico na criação da Apae, conta o filho Cássio, diretor-presidente da associação. Os outros 11 fundadores eram todos leigos.
Paulistano, filho de uma professora e um comerciante português, formou-se pela USP em 1945 e se especializou em raio-X. Lecionou na Escola Paulista de Medicina.
Em 1954, fundou com um sócio a URP Diagnósticos Médicos, pioneira em diagnósticos por imagens. Foi vendida para o laboratório Fleury.
Duas vezes presidente da Apae, ajudou ainda a criar as federações paulista, nacional e internacional das Apaes.
Aposentou-se em 2000. Há alguns anos, passou a sofrer de Alzheimer. Jô, 85, sua companheira desde 1947, afastou-se da Apae para cuidar dele.
Aos filhos ensinou que duas palavras movem a humanidade: "obrigado" e "por favor", lembra Cássio. Era culto e adorava viajar de navio.
Zeca morreu em 2001, aos 52. Dr. Clemente morreu ontem, aos 91, de insuficiência respiratória. Deixa três filhos, nove netos e cinco bisnetos
